It was with deep sorrow that we learnt of the untimely death of Dr. Rolf Hosfeld, Ph. D. (1948-2021), Scientific Director of the Johannes Lepsius House-Archive in Potsdam (Lepsiushaus Potsdam), Germany.
With his death we’ve lost an esteemed colleague and a great friend of the Armenian people. His numerous lectures, scientific publications and speeches on the Armenian Genocide have made great contributions to a more comprehensive and detailed presentation of the Armenian Genocide in Germany. His monographs “Operation Nemesis: Germany and the Armenian Genocide” (2005) and “Death in the Desert: The Armenian Genocide” (2015) also found a great response, in their turn, in German scientific and public circles. The series of reports by German ambassadors, consuls and eyewitnesses on the deportation and genocide of the Armenian people were supplemented by his own studies which also contributed to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Germany and active discussions on the topic.
AGMI and Johannes Lepsius House-Archive collaboration has a long history spanning many years and gained new impetus, with the signature of the renewed agreement by the director of the Lepsius House-Archive Dr. Rolf Hosfeld Ph. D. and AGMI Director Dr. Harutyun Marutyan Ph. D. in the AGMI Conference Hall on 26 September 2019, within the framework of which new areas of continuous cooperation were envisaged.
We are hopeful that the staff of Lepsius House-Archive will continue the valued work that Dr. Hosfeld led for more than a decade, maintaining, with dignity, the high standards he set.
Rest in Peace, dear Rolf Hosfeld!
