On December 3-5, 2019, Deputy Scientific Director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, Dr Edita Gzoyan participated in the international scientific conference “The New Dawn of Europe after the Great War: the Theory of the State and Genocide in the 20th Century” organized by the Pilecki Institute in Warsaw (Poland).

The conference was attended by nearly 26 researchers from Poland, Germany, Italy, Russian Federation, Australia, USA, South African Republic and India. Dr Gzoyan has presented on “The Armenian Genocide and the Development of the Concepts of Crimes against Humanity and Genocide.”

She has presented the role of the Armenian Genocide on the development of the concepts of the crimes against humanity and genocide in international law. The reporter has detailed the legal implications of the joint declaration on May 24, 1915 issued by the Allies (Great Britain, France and Russian Empire).

Dr Gzoyan has also presented the work of the Commission on the Responsibility of the Authors of War and Enforcement of Penalties within the Paris Peace Conference, which was entrusted with the prosecution of also the Turkish authorities for “crimes against the laws of humanity.”

The development of the concepts of the crimes against humanity and genocide during the Istanbul trails was also presented, as well as Article 230 of the Treaty of Sevres stipulating the designation of tribunal to try the persons responsible for the massacres on the territory of the Ottoman Empire.

Finally, Dr Gzoyan dwelled upon the concept of genocide and the role of the Armenian Genocide in conceptualizing this new crime by Raphael Lemkin.
